A „prefer” kifejezést használhatjuk abban az esetben, ha azt szeretnénk kifejezni, hogy mit részesítünk előnyben, mit „preferálunk”.

I prefer this car to the one I drove yesterday. Ezt a kocsit jobb/jobban tetszik, mint amit tegnap vezettem.
I prefer doing something to doing something else:
She prefers travelling by car to travelling by train. Jobban szeret kocsival utazni, mint vonattal.
I prefer to do something rather than do something else:
They prefer to live in the city rather than live in the countryside. Szívesebben élnek a városban, mint vidéken.
Would prefer (‘d prefer): szívesebben
I’d prefer to go by car. Inkább kocsival mennék
Would you prefer coffee to tea? Inkább kávét szeretnél, mint teát?
Would prefer szinonímájaként használató a would rather: I‘d rather go by car (nincs „to”).
I’d rather live in the city than live in the countryside.
Ha azt szeretnénk kifejezni, hogy egy másik személy mit csináljon használhatjuk a I’d rather you did something. I’d rather you came with me. Jobb szeretném, ha velem jönnél. They’d rather you didn’t come. Jobban szeretnék, ha nem jönnél.
